Helping children through separation and divorce the CROMBIE way

Divorce and/or separation can be a difficult time for everyone, particularly for children. It can turn their world upside down and often takes time for them to become accustomed to their “new normal”.
We can help guide you through in a couple of easy steps:
C – Continue with their usual routines and schedules. There is already a lot of change that they must adapt too, so keep up with the usual stuff like going to school, regular mealtimes and bedtimes.
R – Remind them that both parents love them.
O – Openness and honesty is the best way forward when answering questions that they have, but always ensure your answers are child focused.
M – Make sure that they know that they can talk to you about their emotions and what worries them. Let them know it is okay for them to feel sad or anxious about the situation and make time to listen when they feel ready to discuss this with you.
B – Blaming and shaming the other person is never going to be the answer. Your child does not need to know what he/she did wrong.
I – Include the child’s established support system to ensure they have an effective network around them. This could be wider family members (e.g. grandparents), their teachers at school, and/or their extra-curricular activities (e.g. scouts).
E – Encourage the relationship that your child has with their other parent. Just because your relationship with that person has broken down, this does not mean that your child’s has to!
